The Basic Alphabet Letters

Since most letters in the words that students are learning to read are lowercase letters, my alphabet is designed to help them remember the lowercase shape.  Each picture was chosen to help kids remember either the letter shape, the sound, or both.  For example, the "Tickly Tiger" shape is meant to look like a lowercase t and also remind students to wiggle their fingers and make the /t/ sound like they were tickling someone.

The names of the letters are to help with phonemic awareness.  Each letter's name has two or more words that start with its sound, so that students who are able to remember "Baseball Brian" can isolate the beginning phoneme to hear that its sound is /b/.
